Mini Recap/Behind The Scenes
We are extremely privileged to have each other and nothing showcased that better than our virtual pride event.
Hi everyone, hope you are well and safe wherever you are in the world.
We have been a bit quiet since, we are in a transition in terms of onboarding our newest members, working on projects together, building a new website and navigating life while practising our art.
We had the opportunity to celebrate queerness that centred disabled black trans artists
As marginalised people we are deeply hurt and connected to the crimes against humanity happening around the world, from Congo to Haiti, Tigray to Cameroon, Palestine to Kenya. Injustice anywhere is injustice everywhere even in places that appear peaceful/safe as there’s consistent political censorship, housing shortages, queer erasure, extreme weather and covid denialism. Combine that with medical issues, financial struggles and social isolation it has been very challenging for all contributors here at Olólùfẹ́ Collective.

We are extremely privileged to have each other and nothing showcased that better than our virtual pride event. We had the opportunity to celebrate queerness that centred disabled black trans artists and it was incredible hearing from so many insightful and talented artists. We has visuals, music, poetry and really vulnerable sharing to boost our moods and further radicalise us. We were also able to keep the space safe and intimate which is a huge win for us in an increasingly anti-black and queerphobic world.
As a collective, we are learning and growing, and hoping to put on more virtual events and hope to see more of you attending. We are still figuring out how to showcase and highlight the work we are doing, but we don't have the spoons or money for a camera crew yet so we'll update you here.
Updates
- Our virtual pride event was a huge success and we got some donations we will be splitting equally among the 8 contributors
- We celebrated a solar return for one of our contributors
- Kevin shared a short story shared with us (its still a work in progress)
- Lea has been making paper, figuring out the right ratios, learning more about recycling and you can follow them on tiktok:
@lealoveslavenders So fun So pretty 💜✉ I've learned a lot so far- thinner pulp, FRESH chopped buds and flat unseamed cloth. I'll try natural dyes next and the wax seals are on the way!! 😁✉💜 imagine description: Paper making process. Black hands showing acrylic purple paint, hands mixing colour in tub of paper pulp water, scattering of lavender buds in the pulp water, mould and deckle sieving the pulp and revealing the lilac paper with chunky buds. The shaped pulp is being squeezed of water using a lilac cloth then hanged on clothes rail to dry. Same lilac lavender pulp being blended for a finer outcome. Pulp paper is finer in texture and is also hanged up with hair clips to dry. Paper is dry, ironed and folded into envelopes. #fyp #papermaking #lavenderpaper #papermakingprocess ♬ September Rain (2020 Remastered) - Makoto Matsushita
